30 Days in Atlanta

30 Days in Atlanta is a black film

This series is so funny I had to add all three films to the list. 30 Days in Atlanta follows Akpos as he visits Atlanta.

Akpos and his cousin win a 30-day all-expenses-paid trip to Atlanta. The film is a fish out of water story and focuses on Akpos’s smart yet foolish behavior. 

While the film saw limited positive reviews, 30 Days in Atlanta went on to smash all Nigerian box-office records in 2014. Thanks to this success, the film spawned two sequels that are equally hilarious.

Lionheart

Lionheart

Lionheart tackles the problems women need to deal with in a male-dominated world. The film focuses on Adaeze as she steps up and runs her ill father’s business. Along with her Uncle Godswill, the two fight debt and danger from other businesses.

Lionheart was a critical and commercial success gaining praise at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival.

The film was also selected as a Nigerian entry for the 92nd Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film. Unfortunately, Lionheart was disqualified due to most of the dialogue being in English.

The Bling Lagosians

This 2019 drama follows the Holloways, a wealthy Lagos family with a big black cast. Mother Mopelola is ready to celebrate her 51st birthday party, but feuds and infighting are causing problems.

The Bling Lagosians has everything you would want in a family drama. From wedding stress to bankrupt businesses, this film delivers each story in earnest.

Applauded by several critics, The Bling Lagosians found award success as well. The film brought home three awards at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards, including Alexx Ekubo for Best Supporting Actor – English.
