These delicious little snacks are called aranitas, which means spiders in Spanish. We’re guessing that’s because the shredded plantain looks a little like spider’s legs. But no fear – these won’t come running under the bathroom door.

All you need for this super simple recipe is plantains and garlic. The plantains could be green or yellow, depending on your preferences. Green will create a crunchy, savory snack, while yellow will make your aranitas sweeter. It’s totally up to you. Really ripe plantains are a no-go here, though – they’re impossible to grate into strips.

Directions:

Peel two plantains, then shred them on a coarse grater. Soak the shredded plantain in salt water for 10 minutes. Next, dry them and use a paper towel to soak up the water. Mince 6 cloves of garlic (or fewer), and add salt and pepper to taste. Add the plantains to this and stir up until they’re in a sticky mixture. Then crank up a pan of oil to medium-high. Once the oil is hot, take a spoonful of the plantain mix and fry it in a clump. Repeat until the pan is full. They’ll need around 2-3 minutes on each side.
