Carly Cushnie Designs Clothes – Black Owned

Carly Cushnie, a black female designer

Cushnie Et Ochs is perhaps the most famous brand pioneered by black women, rocketing to success since its inception in 2008. Clothes can be purchased from Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and Net-A-Porter, among others.

Carly is one half of the dynamic female duo that created the brand, alongside Michelle Ochs. They met at Parsons School of Design, and quickly started working together to create tailored, sculpted, and cut-out pieces, known for being modern, sexy and sleek.

They’ve come a long way since their design school days – now their clothes are rocked by none other than Michelle Obama, Khloe Kardashian, and Blake Lively. We love this black owned clothing brand!

Black Female Designer Azede Jean-Pierre

Azede Jean Pierre - African American female designer

Jean-Pierre was born in Haiti, and lives in one of the fashion capitals of the world, New York. Her line Azede Jean-Pierre features a modern smart boho vibe, with free flowing designs paired with tailored classics. Of her look she says, “I design for a sophisticated free spirit.” Michelle Obama and Solange love her designs, so who are we to argue?

She adds, “When women design for women, it’s automatically empowering because women tend to be less restrictive in the things that we design. We understand women’s bodies.” She also credits her multi-cultural upbringing – through Haiti and Atlanta – with giving her multiple perspectives on clothing and fashion.
