This is where there’s room for improvement in the way that black women are misrepresented on TV. Taraji P. Henson stars as Cookie Lyon, the head honcho who is often portrayed as a stereotypical angry, sassy, black woman.

At the same token though, Henson’s character is certainly an ambitious pillar of strength for her family. In this series, Henson’s character is released from prison and seeks to reconnect with her three sons and their father, her ex-husband, who is now a successful hip-hop entrepreneur.

Henson’s character is determined to get the credit she deserves for her role in his success. Watch the first two seasons here.

5. Scandal

Kerry Washington As Lead Actress

Many know her as Olivia Pope, her character, but the lead actress in this ABC drama is the stunning Kerry Washington. After working for the White House, Washington’s character decides to start her own business saving the faces of prominent political figures that get caught up in, well, scandals.

To add a layer of drama to things, Washington’s character is still trying to work through her own past. Washington is absolutely brilliant as Olivia Pope and this show will leave you on the edge of your seat every single time, wanting to know what’s going to happen next. Find out for yourself right now.

6. Underground

Jurnee Smollett-Bell As Lead Actress

Jurnee Smollett-Bell stars in this powerful, emotional drama documenting the perils of African American slaves living on a plantation in the mid-1800s. Smollett-Bell plays the role of a house slave, Rosalee, and she plays it well. In the show, she and 6 other slaves (known as “The Macon 7”) make the brave decision to escape slavery and head north to freedom.

Although Smollet-Bell’s character is young and reserved, her strength and determination make her a shining example of a courageous black woman. Underground is a compelling series that, although sometimes difficult to watch, provides a glimpse into history. You can watch the first season on Amazon now.
