4. African Americn Couple Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King
Probably the most influential – or at least most widely known – person involved in the civil rights movement of the 50s and 60s was Martin Luther King. He and his wife Coretta, who was an author, activist and another influential civil rights leader during her time, met in college and their passion for the civil rights movement grew as their romance did. They got engaged on Valentine’s Day while Martin was studying to be a minister, and they were married four months later, staying together until his assassination in 1968. Coretta was also an advocate for LGBT rights all throughout her life, and was often referred to as the First Lady of the Civil Rights Movement.
3. Will and Jada Smith
While Will Smith has been in the headlines in the past for his affiliation with the church of Scientology, the Fresh Prince star and his wife of 19 years seem to weather every rumor about their relationship with dignity. Despite having very public careers, the couple and their two children are a rather private family, and Jada has said she would sooner throw her career away than let it break up her marriage to Will. Together the two of them started the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation, which is designed to help inner-city and underprivileged youth and their families find support.
2. Beyonce and Jay Z
The word “power couple” gets thrown around a lot these days, but Jay Z and Beyonce are very deserving of the title. Not only do they make some great, popular music both separately and together, but the two are heavily involved in activism efforts, charities, and business in true entrepreneurial fashion – when they’re not raising the daughter they have together, that is. They’re on track to take over the world together, and have been since they got married in 2008 – and we think we’re okay with that.
1. Barack and Michelle Obama – Strongly Married
Arguably the most well-publicized African-American couple today, First Lady Michelle and President Barack Obama have been together since 1992 – that’s 25 years. They met at the law firm Michelle was working at, and have stayed together ever since, navigating Barack’s two terms as President with class and very obvious love for each other. They also have two daughters together – Malia and Sasha, and even their dog has gotten a lot of press. Let’s hope that once Barack leaves office at the end of this year that they all get to spend some quality time together out of the public eye.
